Taekwondo is a Korean martial art dating back to the first century B.C.. "Taekwondo", when translated, means "the way of punching and kicking". This ancient art of defense and fighting was passed down in families from one generation to the next. The martial art Taekwondo, as we know it, was brought to the United States in the 1950's and the first school was organized in the early 1970's in the Midwest. The World Taekwondo Federation is headquartered at the Kukkiwon in Seoul, South Korea. It is the central governing body and headquarters of the traditional Taekwondo schools. Taekwondo is instructed under a number of different schools, all governed by the WTF. Chang Moo Kwan, founded by Great Grand Master Soon Bae Kim, whose current President is Dr. Joong Young Kim, is one of nine traditional Korean Taekwondo schools forming the WTF. This kwan, or school, is headed byGreat Grand Master Soon Bae Kim. His protege, Great Grand Master Moo Yong Yun, came to the United States in the 1970's to begin instructing. Master Jeff Schrade is a student of Great Grand Master Yun and carries on the tradition of Taekwondo in West Central Florida.

The United States Chang Moo Kwan Union - (USCMKU)) is the organization of Kwan Jang Nims, Master Instructors, Black Belts and students who come from the roots of Great Grand Master Moo Yong Yun. The USCMKU schools are located in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Florida, Alaska, Wisconsin and Washington. This is one of the largest Taekwondo organizations in the country.
